Some people (us included) think that the original pencil is still the best communication device ever created: - It needs no electricity, no internet connection, no cellphone coverage and no SIM card;
- It works in every language, without having to install "language packs";
- The user doesn't need to read "Pencils - A Beginner's Guide";
- It enables a wide range of expression from the communicative to the creative;
- It's very cheap to make from common materials and completely free to use;
- It works for a wide range of information types and you don't need a new pencil when you switch from text to images;
- It's perfectly recyclable, and when not used for writing, can keep hair in check;
So the pencil is the driving metaphor behind Pencil. We aim to make electronic communication technology as powerful, simple and effective as the original. We've still got a way to go, but we think we've come a good way already.
